A Chance to Serve

Volunteers are need to teach the K-5^th grade students in Sunday School from Jan. 11^th thru June 7th.  The rotational program that is used for this age group makes teaching fun and easy.  All training and supplies are provided!  Please consider giving of you time and talents to serve the children of PUMC.  For more information, please contact Janeen Smith or Susan Williams at 384-2791

Interfaith Outreach Association

With your help, Interfaith Outreach Association can touch more lives! Here’s but one example of what they do:

A working mother with 3 children came to IOA looking for assistance with a utility cutoff. (Everyone seeking help must go through an interview process.) Upon further investigation, this mom was behind on her bill because her 4 year old was having medical problems. The child’s condition was bad enough to require her to go to UVA for more tests. She was prescribed 3 cans of Pediasure per day. IOA was able to help her with her bill, transportation to UVA, and give her enough Pediasure to last until Socal Services could help. I

IOA’s mission is to provide emergency assistance to people in distress. Your support makes their mission a reality. Please make a donation to IOA today! Mary Bailey & Jayme Smith are your IOA liaisons.

The Emergency Heating Assistance Program for the Elderly (EHAPE) is firing up this month!  Your donation is used to heat the homes of Lynchburg’s elderly this winter. Please make your check payable to PUMC (IOA

 

This month our focus area is going to be on recycling. It is time to review proper recycling techniques because if we didn’t

follow the rules and 10% of the container load is contaminated, the entire container goes to the landfill. The whole reason we

recycle is to save our landfills for things that can not be reused.

According to the Region 2000 Recycling Director, the Kroger at Village Court Shopping Center has one of the highest

contaminated container rates in the city!  So let us review….

 All paper products accepted

 Flatten all boxes

 All food & detergent boxes accepted, please flatten

Spring Mission Yardsale      Date Set for Saturday, March 28

More Storage Space Needed

The date of the spring yard sale to benefit PUMC Volunteers in Mission General Fund has been set for Saturday, March 28, from 7:00 a.m.- noon. Because we know that some of you are fall cleaners (as well as spring cleaners), we are announcing the date early this year. If you are moving or cleaning up the “empty nest” or just ready to simplify by sharing your excess “things” with others, contact  the church office.

Does anyone in the congregation have an extra/empty attic or garage or basement available to store some early donated yard sale items? We currently have one such location but it is filling up fast. The more “stuff” we can acquire for the sale, the more funds we can obtain to support people in our church who want to reach out to others in mission locally, nationally, and internationally. Please let us know if you can help out!

The Music Program at Peakland

Choir  

• Chancel choir began regular practice again on Wednesday nights on September 10 at 7:30. This choir sings a variety of music from contemporary to classical to gospel. The choir sings each Sunday at the 11:00 service, adds music to the 8:30 service on special occasions, and performs special programs of music at Christmas and Easter. Adults and teens are welcome to join this choir and to gain a blessing from the leadership or our wonderful music minister, Steve Cox.
• C& E Singers is a seasonal choir for any who wish to sing for Christmas and/or Easter.  This choir meets with the Chancel Choir seasonally. Rehearsals for the Christmas Concert will begin October 1 and continue each Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
• Praise Choir practices on Thursday nights at 7:00. This group of instrumentalists and singers provides Praise music for the Horizons service on Sunday mornings at 9:45. Adults and teens participate with great zest!

• NEW! Children's music programs  meet for practice on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. after Wonderful Wednesday suppers, starting on September 10,  2008. These music opportunities will give children an chance to learn to use the hand-held chimes and other simple musical instruments, to sing, and to experience rhythmic movement.  Grades K- 2 enjoy Music and Movement facilitated by Beth Briggs and Pam Jones in the Narthex, while grades 3 - 5 enjoy Puppets and Music facilitated by Allison Fromm, Claire Gregory, Kim Patsell, and Steve Cox, meeting in Room 205. Handbells

• Adult handbell choir practices on Tuesday nights at 7:00. The choir has use of 5 octaves each of Malmark hanbdbells and choir chimes The bells add great beauty of sound and sight to the two traditional services on special occasions.

Instrumentalists

• Instrumentalists -- violinists, flautists, cellists, pianists, trumpeters, etc.-- frequently lend their music to worship at Peakland UMC.  Most of our instrumentalists are church members with wonderful talents, but on special occasions, guests add to a full orchestra of joyful musician.

Whatever your age, small groups that meet throughout the week provide great fellowship.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study --  New Study!

Tuesdays from 7 to 8 a.m                                   

• The Tuesday Early Morning Class, held from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m., is beginning a new study of the book The Last Lecture. You are invited to join the class to delve more deeply into existing issues surrounding matters of faith and practices and to examine the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church.

• The class meets from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. each Tuesday morning and is a great time for the working person and/or those who are early risers.  Please email Susan Williams at swilliams@peaklandumc.org to reserve your book and register your attendance.   New members are always welcome!

Women’s Bible Study

Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in  Room 202  

NEW!  Please join us for the next study - it will be a good one!  And the group will be better with you as a member!  Here's the scoop…..

• The WBS members are currently enjoying the work of author Beth Moore in a faith-building study of prophecy.  The book, Daniel: Lives of Integrity, Words of Prophecy, is helping us examine how to live with integrity in today's self-absorbed society.                                                                                                                                                                               

• The study is open to all women - both members and women in the community.  Invite a friend to join you on this journey of increased faith and knowledge!  Friendship and support are easily found in this small group setting.

New Member Classes

• Anyone interested in joining our church family or learning more about the Methodist Church, or Peakland in particular, is invited to a New Member Class. These classes are held for three weeks each quarter.  To learn more or to register for the next class, please contact Steve Cox in the church office (384-2791).
• New Member Classes  Watch for scheduling of next sessions.  New Members join our fellowship soon.
• Those wishing to join may do so on any Sunday that is convenient with them, whether or not they have attended new member classes. Please speak with the minister.

Books, books, books!

• Join "The Page Turners" on the second Thursday of each month (10:00 a.m.) to discuss stimulating books. Contact M.J. Pearson for title of the book scheduled  for this month.
• Like to eat while you chat about books? Join "The Lunch Bunch" on the first Wednesday of each month at the Depot (12:30 a.m.) to enjoy a light lunch and a book that will make you laugh, cry, or, certainly, grow!
