Moving Out in Mission

By Mary Adams

As we move out of the “old” PUMC building to renovate it this summer, Peakland people also are MOVING OUT IN MISSION to take the good news of God’s Love in Christ to others in our community and beyond.

*Guatemala is the destination of one of our mission's teams.  They will travel Friday, July 25—Saturday, August 2, to the highland town of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Their goals are: to construct a wall and entry way for the Bible Institute, to operate a neighborhood eye clinic, and to conduct a Vacation Bible School for neighboring children, 100-150 of them! Upon returning to Guatemala City, they will work one evening in Roosevelt Hospital as a part of the Kairos Ministry, founded by Paco and Priscila Valdez, parents of our “amigo” Gustavo Valdez, leader of this endeavor.

*Tim Gerde will go to Mexico with an UMVIM team in August to assess whether that area might be a place of ongoing mission for PUMC.  It would be great if another PUMC member could go with that group which is led be Joe Hamilton of Atlanta.

*Peakland will be represented at the School of Christian Mission in Blackstone, Friday—Wednesday, July 26-30.  They will meet and learn with other United Methodist women and others involved in mission.

*Sunday—Saturday, August 17-23, 19 Peakland youth and 5 adults will travel to the Appalachian region of Kentucky to work with the people of the Red Bird Missionary Conference of the UMC. They plan to assist in home repairs and other projects that aid the poor in this part of the U.S. that in many ways resembles a third world country.

*Attend Vacation Bible School this summer (Sunday, July 13(during Sunday School) and Wednesday, July 16) and YOU can “take a trip to the shore” as LIGHTHOUSES are our theme.   Learn to let your light shine to help others.  Just by attending the missions dinner on Wednesday, July 16, you can make a difference, as the proceeds above the cost of the food will be given to INTERFAITH OUTREACH to help sustain its programs.

As these mentioned above and other individuals who are active in a variety of ways MOVE OUT IN MISSIONS this summer, please know that they respectfully request your prayers.  They are your representatives reaching out to a hurting world. Become a prayer partner with a youth going to Redbird, those going to Blackstone, or a missioner heading to Guatemala.  See the signup sheets on the Mission bulletin board (if you can still get to it!), or talk to Jennifer Moore (youth director) or any member of Guatemala Team I prior to the trips.

Construction News

In preparation for the final grading of the site behind and around our new addition, C.L. Lewis moved the work trailers to the back bay of the parking lot in June.  Once the final grading is completed paving for the additional parking can begin!

Beginning Sunday, July 6, both the 8:45 a.m. and the 11:00 a.m. Worship Services will be held in the Fellowship Hall.  The sanctuary will be closed for about two months while new carpet and new pews will be installed.  The Building Committee investigated refinishing the existing pews and adding pew cushions; however it was more economical to replace the pews.

The Building Committee is working on donating the old pews to Lawyer’s Missionary Baptist Church as they rebuild their church, which was lost in a tornado.   Timberlake United Methodist Church has been assisting them in their efforts.   It is a great comfort to know that we are helping a sister church and that we are being stewards with what we have.

We are also planning to donate many of the old light fixtures and doors from our existing classroom space to the Habitat Re-Store.  It is good stewardship to recycle what we can no longer use.

We will walk through the new addition on Sunday, June 29, during the Sunday school hour.  Most of the work there should be substantially completed.  Please remember that the building is still a hazardous place!  Unscheduled visits must be approved by the site supervisor through the office.

God’s Vision is emerging!
