United Methodist Men and United Methodist Women at Peakland

Peakland's United Methodist Men meet on Saturday mornings for breakfast each week. They enjoy the fellowship and the chance to share in plans to be active in caring for the needs of Peakland and the community. The UMM sponsor support for Heart Havens, "a center to provide for the residential needs of adult individuals with cognitive and intellectual disabilities, regardless of their age, race, gender, or religious preference, through the development and management of group homes throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia." To raise money for this project and for other services, the men sponsor a Golf Tournament in the spring.
Special Event:
Second
United Methodist Men’s Breakfast, Saturday, December 6, 8 A.M.
Any and all male members of PUMC and guests are invited to attend.
Featured speaker: Bill Gorman, M. Ed., director of Bridges Treatment Center.
Mr. Gorman has spent 45 years working with disadvantaged children and adolescents with various handicapping conditions. He was educated at VCU, MCV and UVA. In 1973 he moved to Charlotte, NC, to transition a 100-year-old Episcopal orphanage into a residential treatment center. He held faculty positions at Winthrop College, UNCC, and VCU. In 1987 he moved to Lynchburg, VA when Centra Health was formed and there was a need to establish a residential treatment center for children. The program was started in 1987 and developed into a treatment facility now serving 102 children and adolescents from throughout the Commonwealth.

United Methodist Women
Three circles, the Cordelle Crist Circle, the Ruth Circle, and the Sophie Circle, meet monthly in members' homes. These circles are all actively involved in mission projects, including sponsoring a COPA child, supporting the work of Hope Aglow Prison Ministries and the Fresh Air Project.
All women of the church are considered to be part of United Methodist Women. The fellowship and the mission effort these women enjoy together make them feel they are actively living as Christ teaches us to live.
Each year the UMW sponsor several opportunities for the women of Peakland to join together in fellowship in addition to the monthly circle meetings: the Spring Luncheon, the Fall Tea, Ladies' Day of Joy, and the Advent celebration.
